WHAT IS LOGIC?

Frege’s definition of analyticity by means of the notion of a basic logical law makes it important to get clear wherein the logical nature of such a law consists. Here is why. Kant took Aristotle’s syllogistic to exhaust logic: ‘It is remarkable also that to the present day this logic has not been able to advance a single step, and is thus to all appearances a closed and completed body of doc-trine’ (Kant 1781/7: B viii).

Now Frege simplified the language in which Aristotelian syllogistic logic was expressed and added new laws to it. Consider the logical law:
